Mitski has moved away from the gentle folk style of her previous album, continuing her previous creative approach to produce an American folk release that reclaims elements of indie rock. As a musician who has already surprised us with her songwriting, this comeback seems to show a slight sense of fatigue. The entire album oscillates between weightless dullness and impactful collisions, relying on her previously demonstrated high-level songwriting to deliver a work that is unlikely to disappoint. Perhaps we should no longer demand too much from such an accomplished musician. Everyone has their own musical spectrum, and Mitski’s simply diverges slightly from that of us listeners. Who is to say what the standard should be?
